Russian forces have built a military camp inside the Unesco World Heritage site of Palmyra, provoking protests from archaeologists,

The American Schools of Oriental Research published satellite images showing the construction of a military base at the edge of the ancient site. It appeared to include a helicopter pad, two roads and accommodation blocks.

The US archaeologists said that the new structures were inside the northern necropolis area of Palmyra “close to numerous above-ground and subsurface tombs and funerary temples”.
